Anti-Bias Training
As a member of the Oregon Accreditation Alliance, all Umatilla Police Department (UPD) employees (sworn and civilian) are required to complete anti-bias training each year. Anti-bias and implicit-bias training include lecture-based learning, discussions, scenarios, and small group discussions.
The purpose of anti-bias training is to raise awareness of unconscious biases that individuals may hold and to provide strategies for recognition and mitigating these biases. By participating in anti-bias training, individuals, including law enforcement officers, can develop a better understanding of how biases can influence their perceptions, decisions, and actions. This training aims to promote fairness, equality, and impartiality in all aspects of professional and personal life. In the context of law enforcement, anti-bias training is particularly crucial as it helps officers to better serve diverse communities, reduce the likelihood of discriminatory practices, and enhances trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Ultimately, anti-bias training contributes to the creation of a more just and equitable society by addressing and challenging prejudice and discrimination at its root.
